Bloody Point View

Daufuskie Island is located in the South Carolina Lowcountry one nautical mile west of Harbour Town in Sea Pines on Hilton Head Island, and touches the Atlantic Ocean, the Cooper River, and the Calibogue Sound. Daufuskie is approximately 6 miles long and 3 miles wide. Nearby airports are Hilton Head International and Savannah International. A residential sea island, Daufuskie is home to 430 full time residents plus a large number of vacationers and second home owners. Daufuskie Island is also home to several distinct golf and vacation communities.

Access to Daufuskie is by regular Ferry service, either Haig Point’s private Ferry system available to Haig Point members and guests, or the Daufuskie Island Resort Ferry which is available to resort guests, members of the club, the public, and island residents. There are several water taxis that service the island and which can provide passengers access to Hilton Head Island in as little as 5-30 minutes.

The island's recorded history traces back to Pre Revolutionary War times. The island was home to a sizable population of Gullah inhabitants from the end of the Civil War until very recently. Gullah are the descendants of freed slaves. The 1972 Pat Conoy book The Water is Wide was set on Daufuskie, fictionalized as "Yamacraw Island." The book recounts Mr. Conroy's experiences teaching on the island in the 1960's, when the Gullah lifestyle of living off the crabs and oysters in the Calibogue Sound was threatened by industrial waste.
